The event is the 45th Arizona Yacht Club Birthday Regatta & Leukemia Cup On January 15-16 on Lake Pleasant there will also be a poker run besides the races. The classes, which have registered, are the Portsmouth, Thistle, Buccaneer, Ultimate 20, Santana 20, Catalina 22, J24 and Merit 25. The boat I need the crew for is the Buccaneer. The boat is a Chrysler Buccaneer 18. This is an 18’ dingy, Very light weight (500 lbs.) fully rigged. It can go from stopped to hull speed in just a few yards like a catamaran. It has a planning hull, which can come out of the water on plane and by far exceed hull speed. All boats in this class run a spinnaker. Most of the boats have a built in spinnaker launching tube; my boat doesn’t have one so I will be launching the spinnaker from a turtle bag. I have found this to be a fun boat to sail. It is very responsive to body weight in the boat and the sail set. If everything is right this boat will take off, but if something is just a little off it will let you know about it and slow down substantially. Why look for a crewmember on the Catalina 25/250 association? Our forum is one of the most responsive forums on the web that I have found. Also I know of at least four Catalina 250’s and probably that many 25’s which are based out of Lake Pleasant. I also wouldn’t mind taking a few laps around the lake in a C25/C250. The Buccaneer is a good boat to learn how to fly a spinnaker, being smaller and easier to handle. Some C25/C250 sailors may want to work on their racing skills. I have noticed the 25/250’s don’t seem to register for these open regattas, the only way to get ready for our nationals is to run a few of these regattas. This is the third regatta that the Buccaneer’s have been registered in within a few hours of L.A. this year other than their nationals. Another reason to look here is if someone likes to sail, this will be a good couple of days of sailing, no matter what you are sailing. There is also the Friday night kick off dinner, Saturday morning breakfast and captains meeting a Saturday night party and dinner and Sunday lunch and awards. They expect to have over 100 entries in all so there will be plenty to talk about. As for my racing style, I am not a seasoned racer. I am out there to have a good time and I may not come in the top couple of positions. I have crewed on a boat where the captain was very intense and we did come in first or second on every race, but I didn’t have fun doing it. I just want to get out there and have a good time. If we have some good finishes, that would be great if not, so be it. If anyone is interested there is a lot details I have about the Regatta. It should be a good weekend.
