Dave - Jan. 5/6 - its mid week and short days but I could meet you at 4 PM and go sailing around Mission Bay. Let me know! I'm used to coming back to the slip in the dark.
Yeah and 1 minute more sunlight a day! Its 57 here now but we have a "Winter Storm Warning" predicted for tomorrow with accumulations up to 2"! Gosh, get out the snow shoes and tire chains! We're very easily excited down here about snow.
This is quite a big event in ....Iceland! The daylight changes about 6 minutes daily. The Solstice was as good as any excuse to have a blowout party! CHeck out this link for the crazy weather conditions there.
We will gain about 3 minutes a day for awhile here from now on. But 4 degrees F above and threatening double digits below tonight. Cheers. Oh--- I am in Fargo, ND.
"threatening double digits below tonight" Tom - I've been there, done that, didn't enjoy it a bit! I used to drive to Fargo from Winnipeg for bowling tournaments.. Derek
To me, the winter solstice means that the countdown has begun!
Today the family and I were tooling around town and I asked them, "Do you know what the winter solstice means?"
They responded with the usual nonsense like "first day of winter", "shortest day of the year", and some other astronomical ponderings, to which I said, "No...It means boating season was just around the corner!"
For some reason they weren't as enthused about this as me?
Last night winter weather warning in Florida....possible patchy frost inland. Did warm up to 70 today, and partly sunny. Wind E/SE 10-20 Waves 3-5. Sailed Miami to Fort Ladyda...close/beam reach George did a fine job, sat and read Chichester, occasionally looked up for traffic..had cookies, tea. (Earl Green).. Had to put a sweater on when the sun went down....but it was a beatiful sunset. (I know, rubbing it in....DUCK!)
But, tomorrow I have to go back to the frozen wastelands.....don't know what's worse. Not having it at all, or having it and then having to give it up again.... Good news is I get to come down in January and do some maintenance. Then another mini trip in February.....
The elder, just turned 8, was commenting on the cold days. I mentioned the solsitce and asked him what that ment. When I said it ment sailing season was getting closer. He looked at me saying cool but gave that look that says,"yeah, sure dad." all he cares about now is Christmas presents.
