I was wondering if anyone out there knows where I could get a scale model of the Catalina 25? I'm an old model builder, but haven't been successful at finding one. I'd like to display it on a shelf.

Steve, I can't support you there, I cannot imagine anyone thinking that unless they had no idea what a 25 was. The hulls and appendages are completely different. I know you know that, I assume you mean it would fool people who do know about Catalinas.

Frank - I meant to say one in a hundred residents of Minot, North Dakota whose only boat exposure has been the sterling silver gravy boat that grandma puts out at Thanksgiving. THEY wouldn't know a 27' hull from a 25' hull. Everyone else, of course, would know immediately that the two hulls are entirely different....except for me because I have never compared the two hulls out of the water and didn't know there was a great deal of difference other than the two feet and now am wishing I hadn't responded to DaveC's question in the first place, thus revealing my ignorance and gross incompetence in such matters. Spike, please reset my status to Newbie. I am not worthy.

Thanks Steve, but I would know it's a C27!

I might contact them though to see if they'd make me a C25. Looking at their web site, they certainly have a number of different hull designs available... what's one more?

Thanks for the web site!

Catalina Direct has half models of both the swing keel and wing keel. https://www.catalinadirect.com/store/StoreHome.cfm Price seems a little steep but they look nice. While you are there check out the online catalog. It was interesting clicking through all the stuff they have available.

What the...?

Why, if someone is going to create a half model of a hull, wouldn't they go ahead and add the cabin? After all, it's the cabin that makes the difference in appearance when the dang boat is in the water, not the relatively minute differences in the hull design.

I have the half hull from CD. Nice, the only thing I would have liked better aboutit was if it was painted. The CD model is varnished wood. But it still looks nice.

My impression is that the half model tradition goes back to the time when boats were built by creating a carved hull model to suit the designer, halving it, and sawing a half to create "lifts" or sections which were used to derive the actual building shape of the hull. The remaining half was then retained to show the hull shape, often on the lofting shop walls or in the designer/builder office, or displayed in yacht clubs, if a racing model of note. These models that I have seen are usually without deck structures, as opposed to a scale model of a full vessel for display, as in a glass case, etc. Hope this clarifies (and not obscures), ron srsk Orion #2343 SW FL

Lots of wind being generated by this post too! (although not all related to the subject matter) I'd say we're up to a fresh breeze right now.

I checked out the half models on CD Direct before. They don't carry one for the fin keel model that many of us own. They only carry the swing keel and the wing keel models. Mine is an 81 fin keel #2629. The price of $74.95 isn't bad compared to the prices at the the Scale Model Co's. web site previously listed. Those guys are in the $250+ range.

Thanks for the info. I'd like to say that this forum is always informative and entertaining. Having just bought my boat this past year, I've really come to rely on it for information regarding issues that we all seem to share.

Dave,
I spent many enjoyable hours of my youth assembling models of cars, plans, ships, etc. I have also searched for a model of my 25 SK. Not a half, but a unit I could put on display in my office just for the show and tell aspect. I've not found any such models for any kind of modern sailboats. Goodluck, and should you find one, please post on this site, I know there are many of us that would like to have a model to showoff to our co-workers. Thanks and have a Happy New Year.

I just got my January Febuary issue of "Wooden Boat" today. There is an article about building a half model. It is quite detailed and if your intersted and handy with wood working tools you should be able to make a fine rendition, providing you can get the offsets from Catalina. If I had the time I'd like to give it a try.

Wow! Those models are pretty sharp. I as well have been looking for a full scale model of the 25 sr sk. Might have to contact him soon to start a model of "Hang Loose" since I only get to her on weekends..

Dave et al,

Hope you don't mind, but it seemed too good to ignore so I posted it on the 250 side of the forum. The nauticart website has a C-250 WK in their inventory.

Thanks for posting the link & Happy New Year to all.
