Hi All & Best wishes for a happy & healthy new year!!

I'm presently working on getting rid of the catalina smile on my Std. rudder. Just wondering if there are any modifications I might be able to do so that it would perform better.

When comparing the handling on my boat, to my buddies Beneteau, its like he has power steering. And by the way my mast has no rake to it, thus no weather helm.

Frank,

Sounds as though you have the old blade style rudder. The balanced rudder feels like power steering even with some weather helm. You can improve the "lift" of the rudder by installing a thin flat plate on the bottom of the rudder that overhanges the rudder crosssection by a couple inches. The plate acts like "winglets" on an aircraft wing, reducing tip vortices and, as I understand it, gives the effect of a longer rudder. If you can generate the same forces with less angle of attack, it may reduce the force you need to apply to the tiller for a given turning moment. If you have the choice, I'd go with the newer balanced rudder. I built one, and it makes a great difference.
