Santa didn't leave me anything, but my brother gave me a World Class SOSpenders auto inflatable type V pfd with body harness. Pretty Cool. I guess he worried about me after falling off the dock and solo sailing all the time. The instructions said to test it. So I did. The fun part was getting it back into the sheath.
He also gave me a SOS light. It looks like a regular pistol grip 6v light. But it only does one thing, flash ... --- ... The light is compliments of USCG AUX. Don't know if it is stolen government property or not!

Replace the "salt tablet" regularly. Mine deteriorated over a period of three years and the thing spontaneously inflated. Fortunately i was not in it , it was hanging on the hook in the forward lav.....the Admiral was in the galley, ten feet away. I thought she was going to take the cabin top out on her way into space.....
That raises a good question...I have 3 inflatable PFDs (2 SOSpenders and a WM waist pack) and have never changed the C02 cartrides in them. They are all manually deployed so I'm assuming they are good until used. Should I be replacing the cartridges every year? Also, has anyone taken these type of PFDs on sailing trips that involve airline travel? I've always assumed the C02 cartridges are a "no-no" aboard an airplane and never taken them on our yearly bareboat trips. I guess I could take the PFDs and buy the Co2 containers once we get to our destination but it seems like alot of trouble.
NO CO2 ON AIRPLANE!!!!!! (Checked or carry on) No shipping Fedex or the likes....
Yes buy new ones where you're going, it's a pain. Read the instructions (yes I know, a last resort) to see if the cartridges are scheduled replacement, or whether you can weigh them.
The bobbin, which is the water soluble piece, has a date stamp and the instructions say to replace every three years. In high humidity areas (like J'ville) they need to be replaced annually.
