I've had my 250WK for two seasons now, and I know it's past time to clean and service the Lewmar 16ST self-tailing winches. Can someone please tell me where to find the screws to remove the drum, so I can lube the gears? Also, how long can I expect the pawls and springs to last under normal cruising conditions? I appreciate any instructions, recommendations, or advice you can offer.
If you can find a copy of the old Sailing Quarterly Video Magazine, Vol. 4, No. 1, there was a good video on disassembling and cleaning a winch. The screws and fittings may not be exactly the same as our winches, but probably close enough. The winch they were taking apart had screws on the top, so maybe no help on the trick needed to remove the drum.
After watching this, I decided it was something I may want to attempt maybe once every five years or if I detected a need to maintain the winches. <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>
Good luck ..... and hope you don't loose any parts.
I looked into this some more. I'm sure in Arizona's dusty environment, my winches could use some attention and I may have to face up to the task of lubricating them soon.
Look up www.lewmar.com/support and download the winch service manual. It looked pretty good, with diagrams, pictures, and service procedures.
I looked at my winches today, and they have two slots on the top. At first look, I thought you might need a special tool, but the Lewmar manual says all you need is a small flat blade screwdriver. This implies to me that you can unscrew the top .... maybe by tapping the slots with the small screwdriver.
Thanks for the suggestions. The Lewmar site will be invaluable. I have house guests coming for the holiday weekend, so I guess I have a reprieve from this job for another week :-)
