<font size="2"> <font face="Comic Sans MS"> Ellen MacArthur has seen her lead over the previous around alone record holder Francis Joyon dwindle down to just nine hours. She will probably lose that lead in the next few hours. She is battered and bruised from climbing the mast and repairing a reefing point. She has not had sleep because she has to change sails so often in the changing conditions. It would be a shame to see her fail after sailing so far (she is above the equator in the Atlantic on the last leg.). If the wind picks up she still has a chance because she has a faster boat but only Poseidon can help her now.

Gotta be pretty hard being more than 5 days ahead of the record and then seeing that dwindle to less than half-a-day. But then, if setting round-the-world sailing records was easy, everybody would be doing it.
"Sometimes you feel the need to write, but are not sure why...now is one of those moments. The sun set a few hours ago over the most unbelievable flat sea. It seems strange not to feel B&Q being tossed around by the waves, and her every move dictated by the waves around her. Now we are surrounded by a lightly textured, slightly undulating carpet, which stretches further than the eye can see...by thousands of miles...I seem to have found some kind of inner peace tonight and though today has been a very hot and little restful day I feel surprisingly good. The weather could not be worse for the record, as I sit here we're sailing at 4 knots. But we have what we have. We cannot alter the wather. Its true that the south atlantic for us has been absolutely terrible. We could not have had much more changeable or worse conditions - but we need to remember that we're still here, we could be in worse shape and we're here... It's better to forget the 4 day lead we had at the Horn - and think about each day as it comes, do the best we can - then the rest will happen on it's own. We have pushed hard, and given our maximum, and will continue to do so - time will bring the outcome...not tears, frustration nor stress. Easy to say, but tonight I feel in control...that's a better feeling than the past few weeks."
I certainly hope she sets a new record and I know it's been a rough ride with lots of hardships but I don't think I've ever seen a more negative tone to PR releases than the ones on the B&Q website. No matter how good things are going at the time, they always finish with a "BUT." Bad weather is coming or doldrums are coming or Ellen's nearly dead from exhaustion or peanut butter & jelly sandwiches are drying out or something else negative about the future of the adventure.
Apparently, she doesn't read her own web. If she did she surely would have given up the attempt by now.

Ellen MacArthur is becalmed just 1000 miles from the finish. Since I started this thread she found wind and boat speed and ran into a winning position with only an 8 knot average needed to win. This morning she was over three days ahead of Joyon’s time and now she’s lost a full day with the wind vane is spinning in circles with no wind at all. It sounds like August in Long Island Sound. I will probably go crazy before the end. Apparently Ellen has a bit of a temper because she now has a bruised hand and a smashed MP3 player. No wind, no tunes. Will she make it?

Ellen's stretched her lead back out with 800 miles to go. She mentioned a few days ago the mast is getting really creaky and she has to finish in what's brewing up to be a gale...Fingers crossed.
Anyone notice Mike Golding, racing in Vendee Globe, finished the last 50 miles with NO KEEL???

Ba-dump-bump
The water ballast in the boat saved the day. (plus the wide transom design)
There are a couple other boats in the race trying to finish with damaged keels... and a couple more that had to withdraw after completely losing keels. Looks like the designers have some more work to do.
