Cleaning out the garage. I have a brand new steering cable for a 250. I purchased it when the orginal broke. I have replaced the steeering cable with the "new" system.

Anyone need a cable?

Replace it !! The new steering system is much better. My first cable broke the first time I put it in the water.

Sailbum is right... the original system was prone to failure as well as experiencing a lot of drag and play.

Edson has an upgrade to a pull/pull system, which stops the failures but it still uses sheathed cables and suffers play, drag and a poor steering ratio.

For half the cost of the Edson upgrade, the system can be converted to an open cable system that eliminates play and the drag of flexable sheethed cables as well as doubling the steering ratio to give the control and feel of what a wheel steering system should have.

The conversion kit is designed to replace either the original push/pull system or the pull/pull system. If your asking, if doing the open cable conversion, could you go back to Edson and install the pull/pull? Answer is yes. You'd like the open wire system so well however that you'd have nightmares about returning to flexible sheathed cables and a system with inherrant drag, play and offering a poor steering ratio .

I have been planning to make my 250 K into an ideal lake sailer for us (retired). I am planning on purchasing an APC Cruising Spinnaker within a few days. I'm finding out that I need to replace some switches on the panel - one is defective - never hooked to anything - missing lugs on back. Also have the 2nd gen rudder. Also need to replace lines, sheets, and halyards as well as anchor etc. Fortunately batteries (4 yrs old) and Nissan ob are working flawlessly. Seems I need to spend some bu's here. Any suggestions for priority list.

Frogger, if you went with the open wire steering conversion, the 2nd generation rudder wouldn't need changing as the steering ratio of the conversion removes the torque problems that the third generation balanced rudder was designed to solve.

Thanks! I've requested information on ordering the conversion kit at the email you provided. Anything else I need to do at this time?

Frogger, I installed Arlyn's kit in our boat and have been very happy with the results. The push pull cable that came with my boat was almost impossible to move so I can not report on the difference compared to new but I now have a system that I can repair and maintain. I can also visually inspect the wear on the cables. Arlyn makes is pretty easy, he even has printed out directions. The only change I made from the kit the way Arlyn sent it to me was I put the cable saddles in a drawer and used double crimps on each cable. I own Arlyn some photos of the installation in my boat. Maybe I can get them this weekend.
