I was almost scammed and I want to put my story in the Catalina site. Hopefully no one will fall for this scam. I know all the sailors out there rather put their money in their boat, or better yet by a new one.

I put up for sale my Catalina 25 on your web site. I am not sure if it was your web site or other nautical classified web sites. A person who said he was from Cambodia tried to scam me. He said he wanted to buy my Catalina 25. I told him that I will not sell the boat until I have American currency in my hand. The day I received the money order, I got a email from him saying that the bank made a error and combined the price of the boat and the exporter, and told me to send it to a person in Netherlands. The money order was from the Waypoint Bank in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. There is such a bank (banks) in Pennsylvania. I called them up and found out it was counterfeit.

Standard scam.....call the cops. Unfortunately we have to learn new "street smarts" as bad guys try new tricks.....Legit e-mail leads need to be converted to standard phone/in person dealings so you can assess the other party.

Same exact thing happened to us when we put out Capri 22 up for sale. State they'll give us more $$, but....that ole export fee. Just the fact that he was from overseas made me wonder what the....... I can understand another state. I turned him into the website texaswest.com. They have a great site for selling catalinas and capris.

Same thing happened to me trying to sell my C25. The email was from Indonesia, terrible grammar and spelling. Wanted me to send them some kind of bogus fee, after they sent me the full amount of my asking price. I sdid the same thing previous posters did...called the bank, naturally the check was no good. The bank had received previous complaints and had already notified the FBI and FDIC.

If it sounds tooooo good to be true...probably is to good to be true!

The old "Ooops, I sent you too much, just send me back the difference in cash" scam has been around a long time, particularly in online car and boat sales. Many people are under the impression that Cashier's Checks are the same as cash and can't be forged, so when they get one, they think it's got to be real. Wrong.

It has become a sport to string scammers along and try to get them to send some of their own money in order to cover the "fees" necessary to free up the cash that you'll supposedly send to them. There's websites devoted just to finding creative ways of baiting the scammers.

Now that I've listed Wind Point here and on BoatTrader.com, I'm fully expecting to get a few bogus inquiries. I already get 3 or 4 emails a week from various high mucky-mucks in Nigeria who are just dying to give me 10 or 20 million just for sharing my account numbers with them. Lucky me.

I got a 419 scam offer from Nigeria when I was trying to sell my C22 - I did string the folks along a bit just for sport, but the mispellings and malapropisms in their prose were so terribly obvious I couldn't understand how they took themselves seriously at all. Incidentally, the C22 was happily donated to the BYU sailing club who are restoring it. There are similar scams on dating web sites attempting to wheedle lonely singles, often seniors, out of their $$$.

I'm so disappointed. It's been a week and not only have I not gotten any inquiries about my boat for sale, I haven't even had any scam attempts. Sure is a blow to the self-esteem when even the bloody scammers don't consider me worthy of their time.

Business has been so bad that even the people who plan on not paying their bills aren't ordering.

I got one of the "Africa" scams last week that was different than others I saw.

It was from So. Africa, from a "bank auditor" telling me that a guy had died, that was a sailor and had no forwarding or relatives. The account he wanted to rob was worth $136 million and he would give me 40% of it to help him with the bank transfer to my account. Ho ho.

I turned it over to the FBI.
