My new Garmin has been great in the car, I can't wait to try it out on the boat. The problem I have discovered is how to mount it? I have a pedistal with a wheel. My boat also came with a fishfinder. Its pretty big for a depth gauge but it works. I want to try and mount the GPS so it is somewhat protected by the guardrail at the wheel. My best idea so far is to mount a platform just above the compass between the guarail uprights and then mount the fishfinder behind it, I may need to shim it up a bit to see it over the GPS. This way I can rotate the display to either side to see while steering from the side or I can center the displays and tilt upward so I can see them while standing at the wheel. Anyone else have to figure out something similar? How did you solve it?

I hope you get some good ideas...I just got my 276C last Friday! Haven't had much time to really check it out yet, other than marking the slip and home. I'm hoping to give it a work out down in the Grenadines in March though!

How about you mail it to me. I will then come up with a great mounting location!

Tom.

Lots of mounts made for your unit. go to Google and search for Garmin mounts or GPS mounts.

You've probably all seen this by now, but here is how mine (176C) is mounted.
A flexible gooseneck is mounted to a block of wood mounted to the side of the cabin ladder. Bend it over into the companionway to view, bend it back in to stow. Power/NEMA cable is attached with heat shrink.

hmmmm...I've only found the bean bag type thing for the car and the mount that came with the unit in my searching (using Google.) Perhaps you could show us some of those of which you speak? I'm hoping to find some sort of rail mount to put it behind the wheel....

Thanks for the pictures and ideas Earl. Here is what I came up with. I am going to get a poly cup holder/bino holder and mount it to the pedistal on the side oposite the wheel. I will cut a piece of poly to cover the bino part in the middle that will overhang front and back. This will give me a platform to mount my GPS over the compass and between guardrail and then in tandem behind it I will mount the fishfinder. I will add side walls and a low ledge to the bino section of the cup holder to create a little box to store things like sun screen.

Do you think the GPS will affect the compass? I will have to test it out.

Hey Doug thanks for the suggestion to use Google. I did not find any holders or brackets to work but I did discover I could get a 128MB card for 85 on line vs the 220 West Marine lists in the catalog! I want the extra memory so I can swap out between land and sea modes. Once cartridge for city maps to get us to the ramp and one once we launch without having to fire up the lap top to load charts and routes. Anyone else done this? Hate to spend 100 and find out it will not work.
