Hi Folks, Yes, I do listen to you guys and take your advice. I just got off the phone with Gary Swenson and ordered an Ullman full batten, loose footed, double reefed main. $851.00.
My current main is in really great shape, and I really didn't "need" a new main. but I'll be sailing from Key West to the Dry Tortugas in April, and wanted a better sail. I also got one of Lowell's internal outhaul upgrade kits from Catalina Direct.
One of the reasons I'm buying toys is that I had nose/sinus surgery last week and feel like crap New toys will always make kids like us feel better
Way Cool Frank! I take it you will be trailering down. Give us a holler when you come through J'ville if you want. When I trailered Chick-a-pea down to Homestead, FL for the Bimini trip we took the Florida Turnpike. It did not cost all that much and is much better than ending up on I-95 in downtown Miami. The Turnpike will drop you off on US-1 right at the start of the causeway.
Oh man, remember in my youth had some wisdom teeth extracted. Since my Austin Healy Sprite had a squeek, went and traded it in on an Alpha Romeo Spyder to make myself feel better. Never did like that Alpha, kept it a few months and got another Austin Healy MkII? (six cyl, last model they made) That one was cool till I got married. VW busses came after that!!!!
Colors sounds good, tye dye even better. I'll ask Gary about this. I like those multi colored tequila sunrise type Hobie sails. Some of my whitewater paddling friends have all bought old VW busses, and there are even get togethers for folks with VW busses. Flashback.
I went to Yosemite last summer with the kids for a day trip. Wandering though the place we came across a group of people with old VW Busses. I described it to my wife when we go home, but she said no way.
I had a '73 VW Westphalia complete with "worked" Porsche 914 engine stuck in it (same block). Best non-boat fun I've ever had was with that thing. You feel like a turtle.
Thats a great price for exactly the new main I want. I'm saving up! Perhaps I could sell the 3 other mains I have on the swap meet or one of the 5 headsails (no way).
Our shop parts runner in '69 was a VW pick-up (half a bus) with a Carrera "hemi" dual overhead cam, Porsche 904 engine. This thing would literally shake the ground at idle. Our head mechanic had a '68 bus with a modified Porsche 912 engine. He let me "exercise" it while he went to Sweden for a year. VW VS. Corvette...we held our own. What a rush. I still own a Vanagon, but the Admiral likes to drive it, so it's her car. Sorry for the digression. It was fun to remember the good old days. Tood Frye
