June 18 40th Anniversary of the Club Blessing of the Fleet at 4:00 P.M. June Block Party at 6:30 Women's Learn to Sail
I was looking at our club calendar and noticed this date. We have had a blessing of the fleet every year since the club began, (I think; close to it anyway). For some reason there never seems to be a shortage of clergy around sailboats! (Is it the rum?) We hold a meeting where people bring up significant things relative to old members and everyone gets a chance to reflect on those events and people that we owe so much to. There is a prayer and then everyone goes to the boats and sails past the shelterhouse point where a blessing is given to the boats as they sail by. Regardless of a person's religious persuasion, sailors tend to be a superstitious lot and most people take advantage of the blessing and karma that comes with it. It is a nice event.
There is a Blessing Of The Fleet here in river city every Palm Sunday. They get the Orthodox Bishop to sprinkle Holly Water on your boat as eveyone files by. It is a pretty big deal here with at least fifty or more boats. The Captains Club sponors it and they put on a big breakfast at the River Walk. I had my C-22 "Desiderata" and Chick-a-pea blessed the first year I had them.
We have a "Blessing of the Fleet" on Canyon Lake every Memorial Day weekend - for both sail and power boats. The sailboats dress overall and everyone motors slowly by a minister on the back of a large powerboat, while the official Club Photographer takes pics of all the boats. (We had a great pic one year of the religious person (denomination to be held secret) blessing a boat while he had a beer behind his back in his other hand!) Then we take the flags down and go sailing.... Derek P.S. The "blessing" doesn't always take - the second year we had our C22 blessed - she sank...
