Hey Fleet Captain, where were you? I though you were coming down Sat. night?

Friday's after work sail saw me heading out into a blue sky and pretty sunset to find choppy seas on top of a 4 foot swell. At least there was wind. Got in several hours of sailing and headed in. Looked like a good weekend after weeks of rain.

Saturday Ken (S2 that we'll race Newport to Ensenada) had to work so I headed out solo. The Cavins had arrived to find Valkyrie was quite damp and mildewy inside, so they had some cleanup to do. Offshore, there was good wind and bumpy seas, but the 4 foot swell was down to 3. There was a big offshore race going on. The kind where every boat had mylar sails. There were boats to about 75 feet. I enjoyed seeing these blast by on their windward leg and then sailed into the middle of the pack. I could hang with these boats but I only had my 110 on. After a while they sailed away from me and I found myself racing the 2 slowest boats in the fleet. I stayed well out of their way and never took their wind. But they eventually passed and I was alone again. I could not point quite as high and was forced inshore of their windward mark off Del Mar.

I saw that the big boats had already rounded the mark (about 5 miles upwind of me) so I tacked out and positioned myself to be sailing upwind just inshore of where their downwind rhumb line would be. I really enjoyed seeing the fleet race by with their big chutes - I saw a couple of major spinnaker broaches in the gusty afternoon winds.

Soon the whole fleet was by and here comes the same last place boat again. I gybed and stayed well out of his way and downwind, but ran with him for awhile. I really enjoyed the whole spectacle and it was like a Newport-Ensenada race prep.

On Sunday, the winds were better (12 knots plus bigger gusts) and the swell was all gone. It was still choppy but nearly perfect sailing conditions. Ken was here so I challenged the S2 to our offshore race course: red bouy to pier to yellow bouy and back (its about a 5 mile triangle course). On the upwind leg we were neck and neck, I was behind but gaining a little. The S2 was pointing a little higher, I didn't want to pinch too much - can't give up any boatspeed to the bigger vessel. After the pier it was a close reach to the yellow can and our positions stayed pretty close. Ken was flying his 165 and I my 135 laminate.

On the downwind leg I lost a lot of time setting my pole (under autopilot). Ken doubled his lead to about 200 yards and then continued to pull ahead throughout the leg. He was also using his pole - it was a broad reach, not a true run.

Ken was happy with the victory, but of course, by PHRF I killed him since the 28 foot S2 has to give up 50 seconds a mile to the C 25 SR. Still, its a good sign that the S2 is becoming more competitive. If he set his gennaker on the downwind leg I would have lost sight of him!

Ken had to go back to work and it was only noon with 15 knots of breeze and a flat ocean so I set my course for the 9 mile bank - I wanted to run out of sight of land. The wind really came up so after a couple of hours I turned back for a ripping beam reach all the way home, allways above 6 knots and sometimes seeing 6.5 to 7. I was in the slip by 4:30, took a long walk on the beach, and barbequed hamburgers for a great end to a 3 day sailing weekend.

So Gary, going to make it down next weekend????
