I recently moved to Texas and will be leaving my 1986 fixed keel Catalina 25 in the lake year around. I am trying to determine a fair selling price for my 1986 TrailRite trailer, which I will no longer be using. The trailer has dual axles and is in great shape. I mainly used it to store my boat during the 6 months per year that our sailing lake was emptied for flood control. Both the boat and trailer were stored undercover at a boat storage facility. I had the trailer serviced and checked out just before my recent move from Oregon. The trailer is very stable and tows well! I am having trouble finding information about what the trailer is worth. Any ideas?

You're probably having trouble finding info because these trailers are hard to find. I recently priced a new one for my Capri 25 (which is a lighter boat than yours) and that was $4500 for a single axle. I believe yours would go for at least $6-7K new. You could ask TrailRite for a quote on a new one with the same equipment and then set your asking price at half that quote and see if you get any offers. Good Luck!

$1500-$3000 is the common range. Most trailers our age have rust, marginal brakes, and a litany of other neglect issues. Trailers with rollers are worth the most, then bunks, then pads.

HUM!!

I sold a 1998 Performance Catalina 250 trailer for $3,000.00. It was loaded with features. Amazingly, it took about 4 months to sell it. I thought it would sell faster. As I recall, most of my callers didn't want to spend more that $1000.00 to $1,500.00.

Anyway:

IMHO: A 1986 would probably be worth $1800.00 to $2000.00 if it is road ready with working brakes, good bearings, good shocks, tongue extension, good tires, a spare and working lights. Whew!

New on board. I have just purchased c250 for lake in DFW area. I have been searching for a trailer. Brand new trailrites are about $5800. I will wait to find one for under $4000 (hopefully). The value depends on several features, such as, mast raising telescoping pole, trailer extension, and fitted for WK. I have located someone who will alter a trailer to fit mine for $2800, but am a little worried about the fitting. Is your trailer for a fin, WK, or swing keel boat?

Hi Jim,

What part of Texas did you move to? I would hold on tho the trailer a while and see if you might need it (bottom jobs etc). I sold mine for a 87 wing keel three years ago for $1,600. Now I wish that I kept it. If you are close to North Texas, I could propable store it for you for occasional use.

Shoot, Texas is close enough to Arkansas I bet I could store it for you too.
Really I just need to store it for a couple of weeks while I do my bottom.

Thank you for the great information! I have decided to set the price at $2,500 (firm). The trailer (TrailRite) is in exceptional shape. I had it checked, serviced and the wheels repacked for my recent 1500 mile journey from Oregon to Austin. The trailer is very stable and tows well. The brakes also work well. It is set up for a fixed keel Catalina 25 but could easily handle other fixed keel sailboats weighing up to 8898 lbs. (the trailer's listed maximum load). It has a tongue extension that allowed me to launch the boat without unhitching the trailer. I also have a spare tire for it.

Let me know if you would like to see it in Austin, Texas.

I might be interested in it. Does anyone know the hull differrences between a 2000 c250 WK and the '86 c25 FK? I would think the trailer would work or be easily modified to work for the c250. any thoughts?

A Cat 25 with two axle trailer just sold on ebay for about $2600. See item number: 4528317809. If I lived closer to Georgia (the point of sale) I would have bought it and kept the trailer and sold the boat. Oh well, they occasionally come around. Now the question, how big of a truck is needed to pull an empty trailer for 800 miles? Will an Expedition or 1/2 ton pickup do it? I'm interested in the trailer but need to know if I could even get it home.

Hi Craig,

I agree with Frank ... I don't see any reason why you couldn't pull an empty trailer with an Expedition or a 1/2 ton pickup. I pulled my empty EZ-Loader with my 20+ year old Toyota pickup with a 4-cylinder engine ... I only went 80 miles, but it was no problem.

Good luck in your trailer search ... they are rare ... I would NEVER sell my trailer without the boat ... IMHO there are just too many advantages to having a trailer.
