I just cross threaded my back stay rigging turnbuckle ! Arrrgghh ...
Is there a definitive manufacturer for a replacement turnbuckle and jaw swage for our fine boats ? The local chanderly wants $65 for an open turnbuckle and threaded T-swage - yikes ! Is Catalina direct the obvious choice ?

Could you "re-thread" it with a tap & die set? That would seem to be the cheapest solution.

jm,

Last year when I replaced all my standing rigging, I went with Sta-Lok eye terminals and Hayn open body bronze turnbuckles with stainless steel toggle-jaw/toggle-jaw ends. The best price on the Sta-Loks was from Brion Toss. West Marine and Defender were about the same on the turnbuckles. If you cut your wire right at the existing swage, what I've described might reach. As I recollect, Sta-Lok also makes an extra long eye terminal specifically for repair work such as you describe. If you'd like, I could measure the overall length of the Sta-Lok & Hayn combination, and let you know.

I wouldn't try recutting the damaged threads unless the damage is really, really minor. And remember, stainless steel loves to gaul on stainless steel. Reusing damaged threads would seem to me to make that even more likely. Be sure to lube well.

I would strongly recommend against trying to salvage a thead on the backstay. I say this as a mechanical engineer as well as a sailor. I have seen threads stripped off as the stud pulls through a turnbuckle.

I use moly thread compound to keep the threads from galling. I would tend to replace both if there is any detectable evidence of damage.

JM - I hope Catalina Direct is the best choice because I just ordered all new shrouds for my '85 standard rig. The thing I liked about them is their familiarity with our boats and the parts needed. I have not ordered from them before so this is an expensive first purchase. I will let you know how the parts look and fit when I get them.
I am NOT an engineer but I would not rethread it and trust my rig under load. I want NEW parts. I manage to stir up enough chaos without my rig coming down.

Did you cross thread the turnbuckle or the toggle nut? Catalina Direct sells replacement turnbuckle bodies(from $10.95 to $19.50) and various turnbuckle replacement parts. See page 4.30 of the CD catalog.

Maybe, just maybe you're a victim of galling - resulting from stainless-to-stainless friction? Anyway, I bought eight new bronze turnbuckles from Garhauer with the stainless cover (same as what comes on the new Catalinas) for less that $100 a couple/three years ago. No more cotter pins, no more plastic turnbuckle covers.
