Yesterday (Saturday Feb 25 2005). was a grey, overcast day, but the temperature was a mild 65ºF so I drove out to the lake and dropped Quiet Time in the water for the first time this year. There was never a breath of wind all day so I didn't do any sailing, but I did get to fiaally test drive the new Yamaha T8 I installed last September. We took a 7 mile round trip cruise over to my favorite anchorage in New York Cove. The new motor is very quiet, even at 50% throttle, which pushes the boat at 5.5 knots. I swapped the 5" pitch prop that the motor came with for a 9" pitch prop, and this prop moves the boat at 1.2 knots at idle. Reverse gear is amazing - the boat decelerates from 1.5 knots to a full stop in about 6 feet. The old Honda would take a full boat length or more to stop the boat in reverse gear. Our sailing club is going to have the first Folsom Lake cruise of the year in just three weeks. I guess I'm ready, if the weather will just cooperate and not be pouring rain that weekend. "Selah", Bruce Ebling's former boat that I hauled to Folsom Lake from Oregon last weekend, is being rigged up and launched by her new owner today. Our sailing club now has five Mk. IV wing keel 25's (3 outboard and two with inboard diesel).

I am on a 9/80 work schedule - every other Friday is a day off.
Larry, one of these summers I need to trailer mine to your end of the state and either sail your lake or the delta. I teach high school (so does my wife) so summers can be spent doing whatever. I've had this idea simmering in my grey cells somewhere for sometime. Would be a fun adventure.
I'll be in San Diego Wednwsday, Thursday and Friday this week. Unfortunately, it's a business trip and I suspect that we may be held captive by the folks who planned the meetings, but.... if they give us some free time, where would you suggest a sailor who loves wandering around marinas and who has never been to San Diego should head to first?

San Francisco Bay and the Delta are a fantastic area to cruise; the delta has something like 1000 miles of navigable waterways. After I retire, I will be able to spend more time playing on the boat; my plan is to then move it to a marina on the Bay or Delta for at least part of each year.
Barring some unforseen catastrophe, I want to trailer up to Anacortes or Bellingham this July and cruise the San Juans/Gulf Islands for two or three weeks. I expect to have three to five boats from my own sailing club, and maybe some other boats from the west coast. Would you like to sign up?
Larry, I am so envious... Yesterday here in the land of changeable by the day weather AKA Ohio (SW) we had 60 degress.. Today it is currently about 32 and slightly snowing. I woke up with Boat Dreams this AM.. ...I need to go sailing.. As sson as the water UNFREEZES! With "Leprechaun" STILL on the hard...
I'm in! 89WK rules
quote:
Hey Larry, My club now has 3 89 wings, and a friend of mine has an 89 wing in Atlanta. All have bought theirs after checking out mine.
I think we need to start a "Fleet 89"
OK, I just did. Do you want to be a charter member of Fleet 89? No dues, no paperwork, no official sanction (Badges? We don't need no stinkin badges)

Lightnup, I sent you an email through the forum profile. Contact me when you get here and I'll take you sailing after work out of Mission Bay. I could even arrange to pick you up at the hotel or office.
Otherwise head down to Shelter Island and walk around looking at all the boats. Make sure to have dinner at Point Loma Seafoods (fish market).

Well, it looks like the catastrophe is upon us: there have been several reports in the news this week that gas & diesel fuel prices on the west coast are likely to hit $3.00/gal by Memorial day weekend, and possibly as high as $3.50 by mid-summer if oil gets to $70/barrel (not inconceivable with the war in Iraq, and ever-increasing demand in Asia). At $3.00/gallon, it would cost $450 just for fuel in the truck to tow the boat to Bellingham and back, and my budget won't stand an expense like that this year. I am looking at alternative plans for a summer vacation that won't involve driving, at least any farther than the Bay Area. Maybe put the boat in at Brannan Island (40 miles from my house) and cruise San Francisco Bay and the Delta for a couple of weeks.

Why not get a couple 55 gal drums and fill 'em up now? I've got a 250 gallon diesel tank on the ranch I'm going to reactivate for this purpose. (hedging)
How about cruising lake Tahoe?... that's pretty close for you. Wonder how all the folks with gas-guzzling powerboats are going to cope.
