Can someone tell me the dimensions of the "sheaves" that are located in the mast head of my '85 Catalina 25? When replacing those, do you replace the pin that holds them in place as well?
Two possible sources for the masthead sheaves are Catalina Direct and Bellpat Marine (1260 S. Country Road, Bellport (631)286-8368). Although I haven't bought any sheaves from Belpat Marine, a few people here have and were quite pleased.
As for the SS clevis pins, if they are in good condition, use them.
The mast heads for the tall rig and standard rig are different. I found the sheaves (old style nylon type) from catalina direct to work fine without any chaffing on my tall rig. I have them set up for all rope external halyards.
Ed I just replaced mine on '84 SR C25. I have external halyards so there are 4 5/16" sheaves. I got them through Catalina Direct. West Marine only had 1/2" and I didn't feel like driving all over the place looking for smaller ones (hard to get a good answer over the phone it seems). The old clevis pins seemed fine upon cleaning and inspection so I reused them. I think that was safe as they don't take huge amounts of stress. They're not expensive though if you want to replace them. I had to replace the clevis pins used for the forestay and backstay as these weree siezed up so bad I had to drill them out.
Thanks Ya'll! Looks like I won't be able to put on a new set before the mast goes up. Nothing really wrong with the set in there, just thought that it might be a good idea to replace them as this is a new boat to me.
Hi Ed... The most common reason for replacing the sheaves is converting from the original wire/rope halyards to all rope. The original sheaves are sized and shaped to carry just the wire, so 5/16 rope is problematic in them--actually a problem in my opinion. Belpat Marine on Long Island was the first to offer us a sheave that was wide enough for the rope and had a large enough diameter to keep the halyards from chafing on edges of the masthead casting. Catalina Direct's initially were not large enough. They claim that their new ones, with bearings, are better.
You didn't mention what type of halyards you have--until you convert (for example, to lead them to the cockpit), I wouldn't worry too much about the sheaves. Just put a little teflon lubricant on them when the mast is down.
Also, for various reasons, it's useful to identify your rig--TR or SR--so we can give you more specific answers on some things. It's a good thing to include in your "signature."
