I have a 250WK and I am just begining to explore adding a depth and speed meter. Do the stern mounted transducers work well and do they last? If you have any experience with them I would appreciate your comments. Thanks Steve Steakley "Moon Chaser" #385
I used a depth sounder (Standard Horizon) mounted on the stern for years on my Catalina 25, and it worked great. Easy to clean off, easy to replace when needed (which I did once) and easy on the pocket book.
I won't refute Ken Cave's post, but I will say a transom mounted "pitsord" type speed indicator is for power boats, and are not designed for sailing vessel speeds. Water flow at the transon is "disturbed", at sail boat speeds, and I do not think a true reading will result. A transducer for depth can be epoxied inside the hull, below the V-berth. A transducer for speed can be mounted here also, and involves glassing in a backing plate, drilling a hole through backing plate & hull, and inserting the transducer, with underwater marine goop applied. My 2 cents, hope it helps.

Captain Frank, thanks, that was pretty much confirmed by an experienced sailor at my marina. As soon as he said "when the boat heals". I got the message. I plan to install a puck type transducer for the depth sounder under the V berth and just use GPS for speed. I am not interested in drilling through hulls and maintaining them. I just need to know when my sail trim is helping or hurting for racing. Steve Steakley "Moon Chaser" #385 250WK
