Develop the product, demonstrate it with photos and some time without leaks and people will be delighted. We have a gentleman on the 250 forum that developed a better steering system for the 250 wheel models and many people have been helped by his product.
Replacements by Lewmar are twice the cost of the Crusin' Concepts reterofit kit. So yes, as Frank said, if you develop and demonstrate your desin successfully, you'll have a lot of interest especially since the C25 isn't getting any younger. Good luck!
Pre-'86 Catalina 22 owners would also benefit from a less-expensive window retrofit kit. There were around 12,000 of them built with aluminum-framed windows (leakers). If you expand the potential market to other Catalinas (27's, 30's, ?) with the old style windows, that's hundreds, maybe thousands more boats.
Great! I would absolutely want to test them for a bit b/4 I'd sell them to anyone so no worries.
I will be starting the project ASAP. We've been getting slammed with snow on Long Island so once I can unwrap the boat and get the measurements it should only take me a week or two to complete the project. (That job thing gets in the way)
Glad to see the great interest though. Please feel free to keep in touch via email.
I have the aluminum window frames on my '78 and would very much like to upgrade to the dark, smoked glass, frameless look of the newer boats. The trouble is for 6 new windows from Cruising Concepts its WAY too much money.
Come up with a cheaper alternative and I'll certainly place an order. Lots of people would.
I have a 1978 SK TR model that I used the gasket material kit from Catlina direct on and have had zero leaks for two years. I guess it just has to do with the details. The old material both around the glass and the frame was completely dry and stretched. Could never get it to seal. Re-trimming the old windows (all six) was done in a single day with the material supplied in the kit Also the cabin top area surrounding the frame had some dry-rot formed from when it was leaking that I was able to fix with resin and C-clamps. This provided a more solid top for the "new" windows to mount into.
I have the templates made. I am picking up the sheet this week. Having Easter at my house so nothing will happen this weekend. Should be finished after NEXT weekend.
Keep in touch via email if you're really interested.
Everybody says that about the non-skid. I did nothing to it other than clean. I guess the 1978 "mustard" color deck just held up better. People with the white or blue have lots of bleed through.
I installed the new updated windows from CruisingConcepts. Yeah, a little costly, but I was tired of the leaks, and more importantly I wanted the updated look. The problem I have, is the butyl tape used to install the windows has melted and dripped from the Florida sun. This might not be a problem in cooler climates. Now, I need a way to get rid of the butyl tape, and seal them right with black 5200. Any thoughts on how to remove the butyl tape?
let me know the cost and when they will be available. in the meantime, how do i stop the leaks?
quote:
Pre season plans include new windows. Being that the aluminum frame design never wants to stop leaking I'm going to make new ones.
The ones cruisingconcepts.com sell are VERY expensive. Once I create the templates, the rest will be fairly easy to fabricate.
Would anybody be interested in new windows for about half the price?
I will take pics though the project so you can all see how it comes.

okay - Chris must be off patenting his new windows . . . I've not had the bad leakage problems with Solitaire's windows, but I have spent several hours cleaning silicon goop left by the PO.
Why is this so difficult? Seems that you ought to be able to make an insert that provides interior clading and a surface to afix a 'modern' style window to without a great deal of difficulty. Work it up in wood - West system that insert, the cut and afix the window material -
Has anyone done that sort of 'custom' replacement?
