What does it take to form a Yacht Club recognized by US Sailing, or the Southern California Yachting Association?

Could Fleet 7 Become an official "Yacht Club" for the purpose of issuing valid PHRF Rating Certificates?

Could the National Association become a "Yacht Club" on paper and fill this function?

I might want to enter Indiscipline in next years Newport - Ensenada PHRF-L Spinnaker, double-handed class. Also might like to do some other offshore races like "2 Around" Catalina and some of the single handed offshore races, perhaps building up to the single-handed around Guadalupe Island race.

Indiscipline is fully race rigged and preped, fully set up for long distance offshore voyaging, fully equipped, and I've got a mind to show these guys what we can do.

I am not a "yacht club" type of guy, more of a sailor, and don't have any money to waste on initiation fees, membership dues, and other such ilk.

Jim,

Our club, one of the oldest on the Great Lakes (founded 1894), is incorporated and classified as a non-profit. I believe all you need though, is to form the club, establish a charter with a contitution and/or by laws, and start an active racing program. From then on its a matter of applying to US Sailing for a membership affiliation. You will need regatta insurance, which you can get through US Sailing (of course). They will provide information and instructions on how to handicap, run races, etc.

You will find that the desire to provide "prizes" for racing, insurance, club incidentals, etc, will require a dues and race fee structure of some kind. Can't get away from it unfortunately. Our club dues are $80 annually plus a one-time $50 initiation fee (applied to our building fund - like that will ever happen). Our race fees are $1.50 per race, $4.50 per regatta.

Right now Fleet 7 is evaluating an opportunity to move to Mission Bay Yacht Club. Club officials have extended a welcome mat to us, offered reduced initiation fees, and have slips at a significant discount to what we are paying now. I just may be able to afford it.

Pros

cheaper monthly slip fee
club house, resturant, bar, picnic grounds
fleet of Capri 14s, Lidos and other boats
full social, racing, and cruising calendars
lots of events for kids including racing the smaller boats
are willing to host the Catalina 25/250 (Capri 25?) 2008 Nationals
crane that can handle a C25/250
Maybe Spike, Amy and Heidi would be more willing to enjoy a day here.

Cons

1 time initiation fee
waiting list for the slip
farther from the ocean
bridge with nominal 38 foot clearance
Leave current friends at Marina Village.
Maybe not all Fleet 7 members will choose to move.
