I'm about to drop the mast, replace the sheaves, rig a topping lift, add a mast plate, install deck organizers and rope clutches - All thanks to you guys!! Actually found myself in so much wind last weekend that I could not reef! I ran off into a protected cove, anchored and re-rigged. NOT SAFE!
Here's my question - I asked Catalina Direct to send me 5/16 sheaves . . .they sent 1/4 inchers that are 1.5" in diameter. I'm returning them.
I ordered the 5/16 sheaves from BelPat Marine and they are 2" in diameter . . . Are they the wrong size?
Thanks a million.

DH <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote"> If you told them Catalina 25 then they will fit, they are custom lathed for our boats.
The Bellpat marine ones are proper... the Catalina Direct ones are too small... the line will rub and chafe on the masthead fitting. Some folks just polish the edges of the masthead fitting and use them anyway.
Catalina Direct announced a new version of those sheaves last year, with bearings and everything. Why can't they get that right?? The answer probably is that no manufacturer I know of makes that exact size. Belpat makes them custom just for us, and sometimes has a little stock available.
I've not seen the $30 apiece sheaves from CD... they may be the 'right' diameter, but were a wee bit too pricey for my wallet.
On my masthead, there was a thin piece of plastic between the sheaves that works as a guide to help keep the lines 'in place'... it was badly UV deteriorated and crumbling... I made a new one out of some UV-resistant hi-moly. Something you might have to mess with.

Dave I did all that too but I left all the lines at the mast. If you bring lines aft you need to bring them ALL aft: not just halyards, but vang, outhaul, topping lift, reef lines (obviously), and cunningham. The Spinnaker halyard can probably be left on the mast since you wouldn't be flying that solo and your foredeck person can handle the spinnaker. I left them all at the mast because I wasn't ready yet to do all that...perhaps someday. I'll admit it's nice not having to go to the mast.
When I need to reef and I'm solo or if the wind is really strong I always heave-to. The boat is stable even in really really high winds. I'll put on a harness and clip in though if it's rolly.
