Well I can certainly empathize with you on the stolen OBM. It was December 15, 03 that my brother met me at Chick-a-pea to go day sailing. As soon as I got to her slip it was painfully obvious that the Johnson Sailmaster was gone. I walked back to the house where the owner of the marina lives and told her I needed to call the police. She responded, "Oh no! Not you too." Turns out the villains had vandalized about eight boats, discharging fire extinguishers and stealing electronics. But they only stole one motor. Insurance paid about $740 which I put towards a new 4 stroke Tahatsu 9.9
Someone stole my 2000 Honda 8 summer before last. I had it locked with a cable and a pad lock. About two slips down there was an indentical motor not locked at all that wasn't touched! Go figure. The guy that owns that motor still doesn't have it locked. On my new motor I use a Masterlock on the tightening toggles. I also through bolted to the motor mount. I used nylock nuts on the through bolts. Nylock nut are always such a pain to deal with! Anything to slow 'em down.
Really unfortunate about your motor getting stolen. I hope the villans get a hernia & blow out their backs hauling it around.
The B@$^@&*s are devious & creative (but not too bright). Unfortunately there is little that will stop a truly determined thief. A couple of years ago there was a crew going around at night in my marina in a dinghy & snatching the OBMs off of moored boats. They were careful to work in the poorly lighted & concealed sections and used bolt cutters to get past several types of "high-grade" locks in a matter of seconds. They were finally caught when they unwittingly tried to sell one of the motors to the marina owner.
Good luck with securing your new one. Maybe a claymore with a trip line hooked to the mounting clamp handles?
