I am in the process of installing a new knot meter and depth meter. Of course the thru hulls need to be changed. I'm having BIG issues removing the old ones. Really afrid to 'smack' the fittings with a mallet so as not to crack the hull. Any ideas?????? Looks like 4200 was used as the sealant is plyable, but syill can not budge the fitting. I scored the sealant, used a pipe wrench and also a strrop wrench...still no movement. I'd sure appreciate so advise..
Try to garrote them with a wire fishing leader. A dremel with a cutting wheel followed by a hole saw could also make short work of it. Your hull is very strong.
This ough to get the majority of it. After that I guess you're on your own to get the remainder out. The Dremel might be the best option. A sawz-all might be too tough to control. Good luck.
Biggest issue so far is that I am trying to get the old depth sounder out first. No place to get a saw blade to...It's one solid peice of "stuff"....I'm about ready to beat it out!

If this sounder is junk, you could probably take a big ol' drill bit and put a hole right through the middle. Then you might be able to get a hacksaw blade or Dremel in there and get the thing out in pieces.
The transducer has a flange on the outside which should be about 1/32 to 1/16 away from the hull, if installed properly. You should be able to get a piece of piano wire between the hull and the flange. Just work your way around the flange cutting the bonding agent. Then unscrew the nut, inside of the boat, on the transducer and completely remove it. Take a piece of 2x4 lay it on the top of the transducer and give it a smack. It should pop out of the hull to the outside. It could take more than one smack, but the hull is 5/8 thick in the keel area so you should not have a problem with hull cracking. Just take your time and it should come out farely easy.
A small detail about using guitar or piano wire for this task (that most of you have already realized):
The wire needs to be one of the "wrapped" wires so it will have a cutting action. the smooth ones are good for soft stuff (like necks), but will simply slide on hard material.
