Well, our spring break trip to SF has gotten under way at last. As I write this we are sitting in a slip in Alameda after spending last night and today in San Fransico. I am pretty excited that I can plug in the laptop and hook up the cell phone to log onto the internet. I am not up to Oscar's standard of posting photos too.
Not much sailing yet, Dad's building up some good will with the crew first. We explored San Francisco today. I think the kids got the biggest kick out of the subway up Market street. We got off at Powell Street. That is the most disorienting feeling to come up out of a subway with no idea which direction the world is oriented.
Tomorrow we head in the car to the cousins for Easter but then Monday its off to Angel Island ( in the rain it sounds like - Oscar's Florida pictures with crew in swim suits made me turn green with envy.)
Hit over 7 knots on the GPS when coming in the Oakland Estuary tonight. It we had been under sail I bet we could have made 8 with the tide boost we were getting.
Got to watch the container ships being unloaded at the port of Oakland. The whole process is pretty amazingly fast.
If you can dingy into Angel Island, it is worth your while. You can hike around the island with some great views of SFO. There is also a ghost army base of sorts dating back to WW2 through the 50s. There is quite a bit of history and even a great swimming spot, although it might be a bit cold. The towm of Tiburon is also a fun place to pull for a good meal and window shopping.
You don't even need a dinghy to explore Angel Island as there are several slips available for $10/day that are easily accessible. They are right next to where the ferry ties up. You can also spend the night there on a mooring ball for $20/night. Hope the weather improves for you as it is now raining and could continue for the next few days. We went out sailing near Angel Island on Friday and it was clear and calm as glass until about 1 pm when we finally got some decent wind, enough to maintain 5.5 knots close hauled. Good luck. Tonight it is raining and windy, predicted gusts to 40 till midnight. Glad we are in a slip! Tomorrows forcast is for thundershowers. Will have to see what things look like in the morning. May be a good day to hang in the harbor. The weather looks to improve Tuesday.
Todd, My C250 is in a slip at Ballina Marina just on the other side of the island. I think I saw you Sat afternoon looks like you had a single reef and were healing over pretty good.South side of Bay bridge. Came home today started to rain about 3pm. Don't forget to stop and eat at Tony Romas in Jack London Square if you are having a layover day the ribs are very good. paulj #719
