Just finished installing a Nicro 4" Day&Night 2000 solar vent in the forward hatch...

Installation was fairly simple. The hatch is only 5/8" thick so even after trimming as
much as I could from the two halves of the vent, the fan still protruded a bit on the
underside of the hatch. A speaker grill turned out to be just the right size to cover it.

How do you know that the forward vent will not leak?

The unit consists of two units; a deck plate that is as waterproof as anything else on the boat that you have to drill, seal, and screw into place. The other part is the vent itself, which simply snaps into the deck plate. The path that the air (or water) has to follow is convoluted and has drain holes and is made to allow water to drain but allow air to pass.

But like any vent, it's not perfect. In some conditions, mainly washing the boat or taking water or spray over the bow, it's possible to get some water through the vent. If you anticipate these conditions, you can just pull out the vent, and snap in the provided cover.

Al,

A couple questions. I've thought about installing the same fan but am worried about it making the foredeck cumbersome...especially with the anchor locker open. What are your thoughts since installation?

My second question is regarding the lifeline netting. Looks like you used cable ties. How did you make the transitions from cockpit, deck and foredeck?

Good idea with the speaker grill.

I started with a hole cutter (a sharp piece of tool steel in an adjustable arm), but it barely scratched the surface. Those hatches are tough!. I really believe you could drive a truck over one and it wouldn't bother it! Anyway, I ended up using a jig saw and took my time, and it worked out fine. I also had the hatch on my garage floor, so that made things a lot easier.

While the hatch was off, I removed all the hardware and refinished the underside, which was really rough for an exposed surface. I don't think any attempt to finish it was ever made by Catalina, other that to slop (literally) some white paint on it.

Yes, that is a consideration you'll have to make. In my case, I chose a more efficient location for the vent over a smooth foredeck. I do have plans to install the anchor roller I bought two years ago(!) sometime, so that should streamline the anchoring procedure a little, but it's just personal preference. Just aft of the mast is another potential mounting location.

Yes, I used cable ties. Make sure you get the UV resistant ones or they'll just crack and fail.

I rigged a "bottom" lifeline (to attach the netting to) using the lowest stretch rope I could find (Spectra). I used small fairleads wherever I had to make a change in direction and along the long straight stretch along the coaming (I know I promised you a picture, but I haven't worked my way down to it on my list, yet!).

I just hung the net from the upper lifeline around the whole boat, stretched it down to the bottom one, and cable-tied it, working from the stern forward on each side. Don't cut the excess until everything's tight, as you'll probably need to do some adjusting before you're through.

If I were to do it again, I wouldn't use Spectra. It doesn't stretch, but is slippery and terrible to work with. Some other low stretch rope like polyester or polypropylene would be better. Avoid nylon. And put enough fairleads along the coaming to be sure those little ones can't slip underneath!
