I'm looking to make our boat easier to singlehand, and while she'll balance fairly well on her own it would nice, on certain legs, to be able to step away from the helm. The fellow I spoke to at Edson said some pedestals will accept a lock, but others won't -- he couldn't say which Catalina had used. I'm headed up to the boat (in storage) later this week but my curiosity's up.
My edison pedestal has a lock - in the form of a Knob in the center that when tightened down will lock the wheel.
I don't know if it is recommended to use for long periods of time?
I use it to drop into the cabin to get something from the cooler or use the head. My boat balances out well when trimmed properly and this allows me short intervals away from the wheel (I have not installed an autopilot yet - it is on my wish list though).
I have a 2001 WK and I added the Wheel Brake to my Edson Pedestal. It wasn't cheap, but was a worthy investment. I had the same rationale as you and am pleased with the upgrade. The folks at Edson helped me make with the right parts and the installation was relatively easy, just don't drop any parts down the pedestal! I don't have the information handy, but could search for the details if you need help.
Reuben, I would think you would find the lock helpful and my single comment is that if a wheelpilot is in your plans someday, the money spent on a lock could be used towards the pilot as the pilot not only of course offers course steering, simply engaging the clutch, locks the wheel. I do that quite often on a weather course because as has been noted, the 250 will self steer a weather course quite well.
If no auto pilot is contemplated, the lock knob will provide the ability to easily adjust and lock for a weather course.
