I was just looking at this diagram from Catalina and noticed what it was all about. It looks like about 1997 that Catalina added a stop block on the centerboard to keep the centerboard from going down all the way. Do you think this was done to reduce some of the weather helm? I remember in one of Arlyn’s posts where he said he uses the centerboard to reduce the weather helm. It looks like Catalina has done this as a permanent fix. Are they still putting this in the new boats? As you can see from the picture of my centerboard it is straight with no stop block. Those of you who have just pulled your centerboard out did it have the addition? How would not allowing the centerboard go down all the way effect the performance of the boat?
Part of Catalina's success story according to Frank Butler is because he has provided access for his customers to resolve problems directly with him. In the doing, he listens and applies what they are saying to his designs. Sort of a cheap R&D program, and it leaves the early owners as guinea pigs. Catalina installed the stop block as a consequence of owners telling them that raking the center board aft some greatly helped in dealing with rounding up issues. Keep in mind that this was during generation one rudder days... things have gotten a lot better since that rudder and aft rake is not as critical as it once was, though I still run some, but never sensed the need to install the block. I let the board down to a point marked on the control line.
