Please do not respond to this post, as I have decided to no longer read or participate in the forum.
A very wise man and valued friend called me yesterday evening to instigate a long conversation regarding the ways of the world, forgiveness, grace and the collective good that comes from service to others, and convinced me to rescind my resignation. I regret that certain aspects of my personal life left me without sufficient strength to forbear responding to taunts and accusations. I implore all members to find the strength that I did not; it is time to disarm and disable the destructive forces at play within the organization.
I also implore all members to carefully read the Constitution and By-laws and to consider what is included, and perhaps more importantly what is not included, regarding the obligations of the association, the officers and the staff. Then please contemplate what is good, bad, working, not working, needed, and not needed. Only then can we begin a rational discussion of what should be done to better the association. I'd be glad to volunteer, individually or as part of a committee, to prepare a draft modification of the association's Constitution and By-laws for the review and action of the membership. I shall begin the process on my own this week, but would be glad to support someone else's lead (perhaps someone more experienced, such as Steve Milby and/or Derek Crawford).
Finally, I would ask everyone to again consider the following: <blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"><i>Originally posted by Antares</i> <br />Main Entry: <b>as•so•ci•a•tion</b> Pronunciation: &-"sO-sE-'A-sh&n, -shE- Function: <i>noun</i> <b>1a</b>: the act of <u>associating</u> <b>1b</b>: the state of being <u>associated</u>: <b><u>COMBINATION</u></b>, <b><u>RELATIONSHIP</u></b> <b>2</b>: an organization of persons having a common interest: <b><u>SOCIETY</u></b>

Somebody questions a "decision", somebody else questions the decision-making process, and then somehow people start to feel as if they are being attacked personally. Lost in the progression is the sense of what this organization really is--a group of sailors of very similar boats, supporting each other, sharing experiences, and, for a very few of us, getting together for a friendly regatta once a year. To keep all of that going, a few have volunteered to take on the thankless tasks that make it possible. It is rare that one of these volunteer positions is contested in our "elections"--more usually, we have to beg members to serve.
When most of our communication is in writing (here), it's easy to draw unwarranted conclusions about people's motivations. For the most part, we don't know each others' faces, voices, or personalities. We haven't sat around together over a few beers... Some members express themselves better in writing than others, and some of us (myself included) occasionally miscommunicate in a way that rubs some others the wrong way.
Let's all work on not challenging each other's motives--especially those of the people who have volunteered their time. Let's also work at forgiving each other's hasty and perhaps not-fully-thought-out communications. We're all here for essentially the same reasons, and it's all good.
I've just read the constitution and by laws and cannot find anything that I would consider changing.I'm not even sure I'd want to add anything either. It's simple, straight-forward, and most of all, meets our limited needs.
