For those who read my earlier post questioning the compatability and reliability of the Gilsson GPS antenna for use with Garmin handheld GPS units, here is what I found. The antenna is compatible, but I am told by a Gilsson retailer that the Garmin GPSMAP 76 series does not produce enough power to properly operate the Gilsson external antenna. Too bad. The Gilsson is about half the price of the Garmin GA 29 model.
The Garmin GPSMAP 76S already has a built in antenna, but that is of no use when the unit is below deck - either for use as an anchor alarm, or when connected to the VHF for DSC capability.
Guess I'll have to shell out the money for the Garmin GA 29
It sounds like Gilsson has booster circuitry in the unit and Garmin opted to save the money on the base unit and put the booster circuitry in the antenna. Does the Garmin antenna come with an external power supply? Hard to fault either philosophy, also hard to find fault with the lack of compatibility.
I am in home theater hell right now because I bought my receiver when 5.1 was "accommodated" and passed through but the 5.1 processor was located in the DVD player. Now my DVD is old and often fails to se disks and I cannot replace it. DVD player with 5.1 processors do not exist anymore, the processors are all in the receivers! Now I need to accept ProLogic (how plebeian) or buy both a DVD and a receiver.
I'm not sure if the Garmin has an external power supply or not. I don't think so, as the sole cable connection has a BNC connector on it. It's amazing how little detail is available on the web, regarding the specs on the GA 29 antenna.
