I just got the Mapsource Points of Interest cd and have loaded it on my PC emulator. I had been on a boat last summer that had this data in its Garmin and as we sailed around the lake you could see our routes and path track over the map of Cheney lake. It was very nice for night sailing. It had really good resolution and detail. I now want to see that on my Garmin 76, it is Mapsource capable and has the latest Garmin software. I loaded the tracks from my "device". The map I see on my computer is pathetic and about 3/4 mile to a mile off in terms of the track overlays. I then saved and saved the map to the 76. I can't make the map show up on my 76. I do not understand. Why don't I see the map as a background under my tracks? I look at the main menu and look at the mapsource setting and there is the map title and it is checked. I know it is impossible to tutor software long distance but any help would be appreciated.
I had some problems with my GPS interface with Mapsource. I was able to solve them by uploading the latest software for the GPS, and Mapsource. If that fails, which it sounds like you have already done, then send an email to Garmin. They were able to help me. Good luck. Im still trying to figure mine out as well. Tonight I could not get it to go from true compass headings to magnetic. Took me a while to find the right tab. One warning about software upgrades on the GPS, you will lose all your data so save it first and then you will have to reset all your preferences and so on. The upside of the upgrade was I have new functions that were not there before the upgrade.
Frank: I'm sorry this post doesn't help you at all, but just wanted to ask you to post your solution if you find one. I've also got a 76 that I'd like to do the same thing with but haven't had the time or guts to experiment.
Frank, that's the same program I'm trying to make work with my Garmin 12XL handheld GPS & IBM PC. The program seems to recognize the GPS but I don't get the 'breadcrumb' track when I move. Perhaps the 12XL is too old, and I need another. Once I'm successful with the PC, I'll consider purchasing a version for the Mac, along with a USB to serial adapter that I'll need. I was hoping that if I had to buy all new, this could be done for about $500-$600, GPS and software together.
