I'm replacing the old 20A plastic power inlet with a new Marinco 30A stainless outlet and it just dawned on me, what if the power source on the dock is on the opposite side of the boat than my inlet? My last boat(which was also my first) was not rigged for shore power so this never entered my mind until today when I started planning the installation. Do people just route the power cord up and over the boat to the other side or do some boats have both a port and starboard inlet? Hopefully I'll get a slip with everything on the same side and won't have to deal with it.
If it's on the other side you could always back in. I back in when the conditions are right, but if I pull straight in I run the dock line forward of the mast and back to inlet.
Unless OJ is left-handed, in which case she is ambisinistrous <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle> Derek (who has a left-handed boat himself!)
Okay, you guys made me break out the Webster's and I'm still confused. Ambi, of course means "both" and "sinistrous" means sinister, so what does the whole word mean? That both Derek<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle> and Steve<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle> are sinister?
In the old days, left handed individuals were often referred to as sinister <img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle> because they could use their right hand to shake your hand and stab you in the back with their left hand simultaneously - hence the term <i>monosinistrous.</i> Quiz next Thursday at the beginning of class <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
Not to be sinister, but at our marina, the power outlet is on the main walkway, not the finger pier that my boat is tied to, so I run it through the bow pulpit and down whichever side it needs to be [in my boat's case the sinister<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle> side (<i>port</i>)]
My power inlet is on the far side of the dock on my boat. I just run the power cord over the bow, down the side of the boat and into the inlet. You could also run it along the stern, depending on the placement of the dock plug. Just keep it out of the way so no one trips on it.
Don - going back about 50 years to my high school Latin:
ambi = both dexter = right (hand or side) sinister = left ( " " " )
So ambidextrous is literally "twin right hands" and ambisinistrous is then "twin left hands", denoting someone who is basically left handed but can use both equally well. (In Heraldry, a diagonal bar on the shield - one going from low left to high right as you look at it - is called a "bar sinister" and denoted the wearer was a "bastard" or illegitimate son of the arms holder). OK guys - lessons over - go sailing! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Derek
Is that the sinister bar where I met my wife or is it the wedge of sand at the mouth of a harbar?<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> or <img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle> if Brigitte reads this
