I've never been happy with the outhaul on my 250 but more especially after going loose footed as now the outhaul gets used often to set the power of the mainsail. It is impossible to adjust tighter under any loading. The stock purchase is 2:1. The problem is that adding blocks to increase the purchase for adjusting the outhaul under load becomes a problem for the sail to draw the outhaul in lighter air.

Recent discussion in the general forum allowed several suggesting that a 4:1 was reasonable and I've decided to give that a try and have cascaded an additional block in the boom... a fairly simple project. Admittedly, I've doubts about the 4:1, that it won't provide the purchase needed to firm up the outhaul under heavier loads and that in lighter air, the sail will not be able to draw the outhaul and will require manual coaxing as the current setup seems just able to allow it.

I really think that what may be needed is a dual line controled outhaul... with one line for an 8:1 purchase and the other for a 2:1 as light air just seems able to draw the outhaul with the stock 2:1 settup.

Unless surprised by favorable results after testing the 4:1 arangement, the dual line system will be opted for. The c250 boom is quite conducive to cascading and the only other issue is adding another clam cleat and exit port similar to the stock one on the port side of boom.

Has any one else changed or modified the outhaul purchase? Any observations?

Arlyn,
Did you have to make any mods to the sail to accommodate the change to a loose footed main?

When bending the main are you just using the slugs at the clew of the main sail?

Wil, I simply took the footrope out and as you suspected, left the metal reinforced slug at the clew in the groove. Much better sail shaping with a byproduct that the loose footed main provides much safer on the cabin work as the boom now provides a great handrail. It is win/win except it reveals the inadequacy of the outhaul

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the sail would take the load just at the clew.

FYI - I did a web search on loose footed main. Saw a question/anwser forum from Doyle Sails. Noted a 6:1 would be sufficient on Catalina 30 loose footed main. I would think a 4:1 would work on a C250?

Arlyn,

I puchased the internal outhaul offered by Catalina Direct and installed it last year. I believe it is a 6:1 purchase. It fine.

As a side note for those considering this mod, you should plan on having to shorten some screws securing other parts to the boom. The internal block and tackle will hang up on them when tension is released on the foot of the sail.

Correction to previous post.

It was Crusing Direct Sail site Q/A forum and the 6:1 outhaul was a recommendationon for a C30 using a "low friction Harken Ball bearing car and track".
