It's time to replace our original ( I think) halyards. With all the choices out there, deciding can be a little overwhelming for a relatively new sailor. So I thought I'd ask your opinion. We have a standard rig with roller furling and are wanting to start club racing. Currently, we don't use the jib halyard, due to our CDI furler's own halyard, but I'd like to eventually get a asymmetrical spinnaker. I want to get decent halyards that will meet our purpose and not go overboard.
Also, our traveler has 3/8 line and just does't seem right (not smooth at all). All the sheaves are fine, but I have to put muscle into adjusting it. I was thinking the turning diameter of the 3/8 line maybe a hair large and was going to go back to 5/16 line?
Hopefully, I have given you enough info. So... any suggestions?
There are a lot of replacement halyard options, and I expect you're going to get a broad variety of suggestions. Here's mine.
For replacement halyards, I'd suggest all rope (no wire) either 1/4" or 5/16" hi-tech (if you have halyard winches and your racing budget has halyard money to burn), or 3/8" polyester double braid if you will be tensioning it by hand. The skinnier line can be run external side by side in the masthead. The 3/8" would need to be internal.
I went with internal 3/8" polyester double braid, SS exit plates well above the gooseneck, Ronstan ballbearing turning blocks on a mast base plate, Harken 2x3 deck organizers, Spinlock XAS clutches (get the 1/4"-1/2" size). For cabin top winches, a good cheap plan would be to upgrade the stock primaries (you know you want to), and reuse the original ones for the halyards, etc.
Thanks Leon for the response. I forgot that I had changed my signature awhile back, and that it does not say 1990 anymore. Indicating internal halyards and the cabin winches you suggest. Also to add some info. I d have a topping lift that is adjustable on the boom and with each cabin top winch there is 1 cam cleat and reg. cleat. for the main and single line reefing on starboard and cunningham and boom vang on port. Thanks,
In shopping for new halyards, I came across this company http://www.newjsi.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=42. Does anyone have any experience with them? At these prices I was thinking of going 5/16 NER T-900. Thanks,
