Today I removed the mast-step in order to install the mast-step plate I bought from CD. I noticed the front two screws are sheared off,( both of them ), at about 1/4 of the length of the screw. The aft two screws are normal stock length. Is this somthing Catalina did to keep the screws from poking thru into the cabin? Has anyone else seen this?
You mean 1/4 of the screw was cut off... or 1/4 remains?
I'm guessing 1/4 of the length was cut off... if so, I think your reasoning is probably correct... dinna want to poke into/through the liner. If 1/4 remains, somebody's probably sheared them off in the past.
John J I found the same on the two forward screws when I did that to my '84 C25. I used 3M 4200 on everything and put them back in. That was a month ago and I've been out 4 times since then .. so far so good
In working on my C-25, I've found factory installed screws cut short to avoid poking through in several places. If you've got assembly workers smart enough to cut the occasional screw to length (which obviously they did), it's probably cheaper than specifying, ordering, stocking, and keeping track of, a small number of odd length screws for a slow moving assembly process being done by skilled craftspersons.
