I was at Lowes today and saw something that would make a good whisker pole.
In the aluminum awning section, they have extruded aluminum posts used for holding up patio covers. The piece I was eyeballing was 2 in square. I am going to guess the weight to be 7 lbs for a 10 foot section and it looked plenty strong. .
They have 8 footer for about $12 and 10 footers for $20.
If it was built right, I envision a whisker pole that could also be used for a standing A-frame as well.
There are a coulple of problems to figure out and that is where everyone here comes in.
How to connect the two halves together? What kind of ends do you put on a square pole. I would like to make the parts if possible to keep the cost down(very important). This has the makings of a very strong $25 whisker pole
Even my Catalina Direct whisker pole flexes under pressure, the load holding out the jib is very high even in moderate winds. As for the A frame The discussion on materials comes up when ever the topic returns. The load on the A frame is very high especially when the mast is just going up. I have tried several materials and have chosen heavy steel tubing, not conduit, not aluminum and especially not anything designed to hold up an awning. I would stay away from materials that are not designed for marine use.
