I decided on the new Tohatsu 9.8 4 stroke outboard to replace my tired old Yamaha 9.9. I placed an order for a long shaft expecting the new motor to be a 25" shaft, similar to my old Yamaha.
When I went in to pick up the motor it turned out to be a 20" shaft. The 25" shaft is called ultralong. The dealer is trying to help by making the switch to the ultralong for me. That hasn't been decided or arranged yet.
My question is this: My outboard motor bracket is adjustable and it can be lowered to set the shorter shaft motor low enough to work. I guess it concerns me to have the motor ride 5" lower on the transom and may be harder to reach controls etc.
Any thoughts or experiences?
Thanks

Putting the mount low enough to keep the prop buried will put the powerhead very close to the water... more subject to 'swamping' if you have any wave action where you sail.
I'd try and get the motor swapped out for an XL shaft.
I'd absolutely get it swapped out. You wanted a 25" shaft. Some stores call it bait and switch. Remember the customer is always right (or SHOULD be).
Having the controls lower is one concern and well founded. It would also be that much lower and harder to lift up because of reduced leverage. If you haven't taken delivery, you can always walk out. There are other places that sell motors if this dealer won't help you get what you want. Enjoy you new motor. If you have taken delivery, you could contact the manufacturers rep to request help. If you have to take a $100 "hit" on a "trade-in" I still think it would be worth it.
