I was looking at the West Marine catalogue and saw an item called a Wincher, which is a rubber disk that fits over your winch , making it act like a self-tailer. Anybody have any experience with these?
My sheets are too fat for Winchers. On another boat I found that they didn't really self-tail, but they were convenient as an alternative to a cleat. On my boat, I find that I need to keep some upward tension on the sheet while winching to prevent overwraps at the base, so I doubt Winchers would do the trick.
I have used Winchers for the past couple of seasons. I usually single hand, and they come in handy. For the $20 or so they cost, they are well worth the it to the single-hander. Just as a note, they are not designed to be self tailers. The sheet doesn't go inside the groove, you simply add an wrap or to and the wincher compresses the 4-5 sheet wraps. Chris
I also use winchers and find them very handy. My sheets, however, do go into the grooves and are held very well. I recommend them as an inexpensive way to improve things.
I installed the winchers when I first got the boat since I mostly single hand. You need three wraps to secure the sheets, four if they are wet.
The benefit is that you need not cleat off. The down side is that you have to unwrap the sheets instead of just pulling up (if you have jam cleats).
I like'em. My buddy Paul thinks they are too much work and slow. When we used to be in narrow Redwood Creek, access to the Bay was a mile of quick tacks. He did it better than me.
But to be able to just drop the bitter end of the sheet instead of cleating is a good thing.
