We have discussed chart plotting here in the resent past. Many have gone the whole way by purchasing Maptech or some other expensive program. Some have used Oziexplorer with success. I just purchased a program produced by National Geographic called Back Road Explorer. All I wanted was the digital chart for the lake I sail on. I need the digital chart for Oziexplorer which I was considering buying. To my surprise the program that comes with Back Road Explore will talk to my GPS, upload & download waypoints, track the GPS, plot the track and waypoints, etc. The cost of this product was $29.99 at Costco.
Now I realize that this program isn't as powerful as the others, but for a beginner it will accomplish at least $30 worth of education, entertainment, and joy for this lake sailor. It comes with all 50 states digital maps. I was surprised to find the San Juans and the Vancouver Island area around Sydney and Vicoria included.
If you have a GPS and a laptop (desk top if just trip planning) all you need is a data cable to connect them and you are set. I may want to upgrade to the more powerful OziExplorer in the future, but this works for now.
