I broke the tiller handle of my '99 Honda 9.9HP outboard. Most times when I tilt it up, the upper end of the rubber hand grip bumped against the transom. The first time I tilted it up (bought this C25SR/SK Nov 04) it made contact with the transom - I noticed that PO had done so many times - as the rubber on the hand grip was mushed back. Thinking that this is standard Operating procedure, I contined to bump the handle against the transom everytime I tilted the motor up - it bumped for the last time the other day - the tiller handle broke at its swivel point where it is attached to the motor. I went to the local Honda OB parts bandit - and I can replace the handle for about $100. What do you think I should do after I replace the handle? Should I be looking for another motor mount that will extend it further out, or is my method just wrong. I always position the handle straight up, then tilt the motor. Here's a picture of what it used to look like before I bashed it for the last time.
You either need to raise the mount, extend it out, or not tilt the motor so much. Depending on what holes are used in the mounting bracket, it might be that raising the mount an inch or so might be the easiest way out? All you need is just enough so it's not in a bind.
I had to extend my Garhauer mount 6" further back when I bought my new Yamaha T8. The motor came with an extra-long tiller handle that hit the stern pulpit stanchion, preventing the motor from being turned to the left. I fabricated a bracket extender out of a pair of 4" x 6" x 1/4" wall aluminum tubes. It's ugly as sin but gets the job done and it's very strong while adding only about 9 pounds of weight.
A motor does not need to be inline with the centerline of the boat to tilt. Put it hard over so the handle is on top rather than on the side and see if it still hits.
I'll try the hard over first. A friend suggested adding a layer to the motor mount. He also suggested this site... http://www.emachineshop.com/ to fabricate 'something'
I'll probably end up doing as suggested in a previous thread, and get a four spring mount. thx
