I have a Windex 15 wind indicator at my mast head. Last spring I found the tail half of the vane broken off. The pivot portion and front half (arrow) doesn’t work well by itself. I dropped the mast and installed a Windex 15 replacement vane. Last week, I found the last 2 inches of the tail laying on the deck. I’m on the Wye River off the Chesapeake Bay. I’ve noticed on at least one occasion an Osprey perched for a few minutes on my wind vane. One plan is to “beef up” (strengthen) the next vane to hopefully correct the problem, but that will add more weight to the vane and make it less sensitive. I’ve also thought fo adding some kind of protective grid above the vane, but I don’t want to add a lot of “claptrap” to the masthead. A third possibility is to abandon the masthead mounted vane altogether, and just go with two shroud mounted indicators, but I hate to give up on the masthead location. Any suggestions? Dan,

Windex makes a 15" windvane that installs on a whip antenna that would probably be a little stronger than the normal setup. Maybe if the antenna is in the way, the Ospreys(those aren't the tilt rotor kind of Ospreys are they?) won't be so quick to land on it. Anyway, check it out.

I witnessed a blue herron get tangled up with my whip antenna one night - which caused him to try out another windex one boat over. How did I know it was a "him"? Cause my 1st mate calls him Herman, of course!
