I’ve been in the market for a small Catalina for several months now. I’ve spent a lot of time on large racing machines to know that all I really want is a small (not too small) boat. A boat that at least has an enclosed head. I’m not interested in taking the boat anywhere. I don’t need to trailer anywhere. Just kept at my slip.
I’ve looked at a lot of C27s. I’m more interested in a C25 fin keel. The problem I’m having is finding a C25 for sale just to look at. I’ve seen lots of pictures. But it does not give me any indication of interior space. I know that the C27 is 2 feet longer over all but shorter at the water line. Can anyone please give me the difference (that you know of) between the two boats? Interior space, sailing powering and handling abilities?

Where are you From?
I have a c-25 swing that you can take a peak at here in Cleveland. The keel isn't what you want, but the interior is the same...(keep in mind there are two different interior styles...
I've had both the 27 and now the 25 -- I much prefer the 25 it seems as roomy down below but is far better to single hand (I've also had a 22) and the 25 is great for cruising just marginally smaller than the 27 -- I bet most of the 27's extra room is in the V berth. I'm dead against an atomic four rusting away with electrolysis -- which is what most 27's have. You can buy 2 great long shafts for the price on one atomic 4 overhaul.
You don't say where you will sail or what kind of sailing you intend to do. I bought a C25 because I am a weekend cruiser (occasional 4-6 day cruises with 1st mate.) I wanted the largest boat with an outboard. Didn't want to be bothered with the internal stinknoisesmellmaker. Also, didn't have need for larger 30+ boat at this phase of my life. Exploring the inner reaches of the Chesapeake require a low profile - the C25 wing keel is 2'10" (however rudder is about 3", a hazard to be aware of.) C25 is a great boat.
I also spent many months inspecting catalina 27s before purchasing a cat 25. One consideration about the interior, which I discovered too late. If you are close to 6' tall, or taller (like me) the 25 is too small down below. I have the scars and bruises on my head to prove it. If you want a boat with an outboard, however, the 25 is much more user friendly. The engine and controls are close to the cockpit, you can simultaneously steer with both the engine and rudder, which is great in close quarters, and you can raise the engine while under sail.
I have my cat on western lake Erie if you want to check out a fin keel, standard rig 25.
Xavier – I went out specifically to buy a C27 and ended up with a C25 and am glad I did. One caveat is I stand 5’-7” and can stand up inside without raising the pop-top. The cost of my boat was a good 5k less than any of the C27’s and did not have the bowsprint wire or cabintop traveler issues that I have seen C27 owners struggle with. You’ve heard about the waterline advantage of the C25 so there are allot of issues with the C27. I think the step you should consider is a C25 or a C30. My next will be 30’ not the 27’. Having said that, pick the best boat available in your area. A poor C25 is not better than a clean C27. When you buy your C25 come back and join the C25/C250 National Association. There are many benefits including the font of knowledge here.
