The sailing community lost a truly great person last week as Charlie Segal died in a boating accident.

http://www.thelog.com/news/newsview.asp?c=156879

Charlie was the local (Marina Del Rey, CA) salesman at Catalina Yacht Anchorage and a local sailor here since he was a kid. I bought my C250WK from him in '03, and he drove me to the Catalina factory when my boat was being built and later went out with me on our shakedown cruise. Whenever I came to the marina to work on the boat, whether after work during the week or on a weekend, Charlie was always there. When I asked him if he actually lived in his office, he told me, "I've got four kids to put through college!". Last year, when we were talking about having him arrange to lower my mast in the slip, he told me, "Well, whenever we do it, I want to be there. I know how picky you are.". It didn't matter if you had a 250 or a 40 footer, Charlie always treated you like a King.

The link above is one version of happened. Other versions are starting to surface and questions being asked about some of the decisions that were made.

So be careful out there, and don't get complacent. You just never know...

Al,

I too bought my 250 from Charlie. I just had contacted him to get some voids fixed on my boat, and I was on my way to my on the 21st to see the completed work. I was paged by Doug, who told me the work had not completed, and the reason why.

I agree with you - he always treated you like a king!

See my posting in the General Forum after I attended his memorial.

"Did you know this man?"
