I am needing some advice about flushing a tohatsu xl shaft motor. How are you guys doing this? is the motor tilted up and fixed, and are you using muffs or the plug. I had big trouble getting muffs on and had to run the motor tilted to get any flush of the motor. Help..... Dan
We broke the handle off our engine this year and it was our first year. So needless to say the service shop is doing our flushing. If you find an answer to your question someplace outside this site, please post it here.
I've used the ear muffs to flush mine while it is on a stand I made of 2x4's. Tohatsu also makes a connector that fits on a hose and connects to a tapped hole in the lower unit near the oil fill hole is. Try bending the ear muff to fit tighter and use less hose pressure so it doesn't float off.
Just picked up my new Nissan 9.8 XL Shaft (same motor as Tohatsu)today. I did get the fitting to put on down by the oil plug. Hope to try first time this weekend. Let's keep in touch. I have imagined the difficuties you are describing.
I used muffs on my old Yamaha XL shaft and it was tough. I could not get the flush access plug out. I plan to start from day one with the flush plug and keep the threads working well. Will keep you posted.
Chris, re you able to get the fitting in after every use in seawater, and do you flush with the motor at full upright position of the mount, and, do you flush with the motor in tilted up position? Thanks, sorry for not knowing. Danny
I have the hose connector for my Tohatsu XL and flush the way the manual specifies. Install plug, attach hose, tape over water intake, and lower motor. From that point it is done normally.
I have not had the motor on the boat and in the water yet. Hopefully this weekend. I have the flush attachment but have not used it yet. It seems a bit awkward but will keep you posted.
I have a Johnson and flushed it at the end of the season. This,I have found out, was not enough. The cooling line to the motor was blocked and needed to be opened up. I plan to flush using the muffs every 2 weeks.
