For many months, we've planned for a Great Lakes cruise this season with hopes of doubling the time missed last season when family illness thwarted our normal summer cruise.
Again this year, things are stacking up against a long time frame vacation, a son getting married, work load, family needs... And... there is even some concern that a Lake Superior venue this season may be an unusually cold one.
We've regrettfully decided on smaller segment sailing venues with the first being the Trailer Sailing groups Pensacola Beer cruise this month if another haul rig can be squeezed into the area.
Al and John, I was really looking forward to Lake Superior and Isle Royale this year and getting to meet up with Y'all for a couple of days... The chartwork and preperation planning will not be discarded... perhaps another year soon.
Aryln, should have trailered to Jax. this week for the MUG RACE then went to the BEER cruise. Would have been great to have you join us, then you and Tom could trailer over in tandem.
Yep... that may have worked. Decision was made last night to change plans. I do have a sister at Jax that doesn't get visited often and it would have been good. Is it a yearly event... maybe can do next year.
Last time there was in 2001, sailed Pensacola for a week and left the boat there... and spent a few days visiting sister. I was beginning to think Florida was almost as far across as Texas .
Arlyn, I plan on being there as well. With the Potters that makes at least 3 of us. I plan on launching at first light on Fri. I am unsure if I am going to use the main area or the Naval Station ramp. Any thoughts?
John and I wee just exchanging emails on this summer. Sorry you can't make it. Thus far the weather does not look promising - 22 degrees this morning with very heavy frost, snowed all day yesterday. Spring is still young yet though, and I still have high hopes of launching in the last week of May.
John and I are tentativley planning a North Channel (Lake Huron)cruise next year. If you can make another plan for Superior, we can try that to. Anyway, we want to keep our plan for a C25/250 Upper Lakes Cruising Club going so I guess the watch word is any time, any- where, so long as time is available.
Have a great time with the guys and gals in Florida.
I'm flexible but my tentative plan is to put in at shipyard marina and store my haul rig there. Like you, plans are to drive down thursday, will sleep on the trailer thursday night, and launch early friday morning. I'm doubting slips will be available there so will need to plan anchorage somewhere.
I'm not opposed to any other ramp that would provide storage for the haul and may hear something from Ben or Tom on that soon. I've stored once but didn't launch from the marina down on the ICW as they have a fenced in storage yard... can't recall their name right now.
I've no experience with the Navy ramp.
I either need to get a hussle going on chartwork, find my old set of waypoint data or get Brian's waypoint info. I'm concerned about old data after the hurricane may have rearanged things.
Al, went to a baseball game last night and wearing a long sleeve shirt, full breeches and a good windbreaker it was shiver time. That is not normal for May weather in Texas. By this time, we would normally be in shirt sleaves and shorts with no concern for a jacket, and have been that way for a month.
Though I've referenced the weather... other factors played the deciding factors into the change of plans. My only child is getting married in early August, got flooded with work load and don't have a lead man who can keep things going without me, my wife was concerned about taking so much time off her job as she was off a lot last year with her mother's illness, and her mother's health remains precarious.
I love sailing the North Country and the decision to cancel is a tough one.
We will defininately miss you this summer Arlyn, sounds like your plate is already full. As northern sailors the cold is something we deal with on a regular basis. Late June tends to be rather storm free, though there are exceptions. I hope the wedding is wonderful and that the sailing you get this summer keeps you happy all winter.
some days when I get a far away look in a noisy classroom my students who know of my passion for sailing, accuse me of mind sailing. Well soon we will be on the water again. Hope you have a great summer.
