This week I will be installing the new Garhauer 4 spring motor mount for my 9.9 Yamaha 4 stroke. I was hoping to get a few opinions on some questions I have.
-Could I use <b>1/4"</b> Starboard on the outside of the transom instead of the <b>1/2"</b>.
-The motor mount that is on there now has a piece of Starboard cut like a wedge between the mount and the transom.I am not sure why it was done that way except maybe to change the angle of the prop. Any ideas?
-Should the Starboard extend past the brackets horizontally?
-Catalina Direct recommends using 3M 4200.Any other recommendations?
Thank you for all your expertise! It's always appreciated!
- I agree on the 1/2" Starboard--1/4" is not a very strong material. The 1/2" stuff works very easily with woodworking tools. Wider is probably not that much better because of the curve of the transom--the sides will tend to be slightly off the fiberglass, not doing much for reinforcement.
- I chose to extend the starboard something like 6" (don't rememember exactly) below the bracket. The weight of the engine, leverage of the bracket, and forward thrust will all push the bottom of the bracket in and pull the top out.
- 4200 or Lifecaulk are about the same stuff, and are preferred for most things on boats where you want to be able to remove or rebed something some day. Don't use 5200 or any other polyurethane caulk--it could damage the gelcoat if you ever try to take things apart.
Thank you both for the quick response! I took your advice and used the 1/2" Starboard. The new motor mount works like a champ and was worth every penny!I can't believe how much easier it is to lift the motor.
