Has a 6" horizontal crack .(I think it's where the iron ballast meets the fiberglass) It was filled a few years ago by former owner when I bought the boat. The crack seems to appear every year and I grind a small bit and then patch.
Any suggestions to prevent a recurrence? What's happening? should I check the forward keelbolt?
If it recurs after being patched, that means it's moving a little bit. I'd try torquing the keel bolts down a bit and then patch it again and see if that helps next year.
Some fins had their keel bolted to a plywood base and over time the wood deteriorates and causes the "SMILE". The advice to torque the keel bolts was right on. Hopefully the keel bolt nuts are still doing their job. If all is as should be torquing the bolts to specs should wipe away the smile. If it doesn't then the possibility of a decaying keel base is likely. I hope not and don't want to get ahead of myself in considering that condition and it's cure.
