The Standard DS 1 depth sounder on my 86 Cat 25 has stopped working. It still has power and the connection to the transducer is intact. If it is "a gonner",I would like to replace it with a like sized unit (4 inch hole). The boating cataloges don't show any 4" diameter units, any suggestions? I do not have the original manual, makes it hard to trouble shoot it. Is this a common problem with boats of this age?
Plug the whole and go with a fish finder. Cheaper and much more useful than a depth gauge only.
You probably wouldn't do it this way, but this little Humminbird Fish Finder was only $75, reads to 600 feet, is on a mount that pops the unit off in 5 seconds for storage, and has good resolution. Oh yeah, the transponder is just epoxied to the inside of the hull just forward of the keel. Temperature and speed sensors are an option and require throughhull mounting.

Yes indeed...
You can make a nice teak backing plate to cover that huge hole and install a 'modern' sounder with a smaller footprint. The teak looks pretty classy there too.
