IMHO for a boat the size of the C25, a nicely rigged topping lift does just fine. Downside of a rigid vang on a C25 is that the pop top can't be raised with the vang in place... should you live in a warm enough place to raise the pop top.
Greg; I have a garhauer rigid vang on our 250WB and I am very happy with it. Having ended up unconcious in the SF Bay due to a newbee at the helm while I was going forward, I consider the rigid vang to be a safety item. The lateral pressure of the rigid vang when the boom is out tends to damper an uncontrolled jibe. I installed a garhauer vang on my H35.5 and when we down sized to the C250, the fixed vang was the first thing that I installed. I would disagree with the previous comment that they all work. I tried the largest model boomkicker and it was not capable of holding the boom up so I returned it. The garhauer can hold it up. Whatever rigid vang that you use, you must disable the swivel pin that is located between the goose neck and the front of the boom. If you don't stop the rotatin of the boom, the rigid vang will bind as the horizontal boom wants to conform to the pocket of the sail. Although Catalina has strong opinons about this, they advised me to weld the pin with a rigid vang. I also have a quick release bracket so the bottom of the vang can be released from the mast for tailering. My vang sheet is led aft to the cockpit through a swivel block, a turning block and a cam cleat. I have removed my topping lift all together so that I don't have to go forward to tighten it to prevent the slacked TL from becoming tangled on the back stay. Be sure to place a stopper knot in the vang sheet to prevent the back of the boom from hitting your back stay. The rigid vang fits above the raised pop top of the C250. The rigid vang is worth the money because it gives you more vang purchase, greater control and safety. The garhauer vang is the best vang for the buck!
Thanks for the info. I'm sold on my next purchase. My next questions are: 1. Did you buy the 12:1 or the 16:1 2. What other hardware is needed 3. how hard was to install
