Well today I learned that the column of wood that gives the mast support inside the cabin is hollow. The four screws screw into the deck to hold down the mastplate, but only one screw comes in contact with the wood from the post. It is also slightly forward of the post. My question would be, Does this seem normal?

Yes, Barry..it is quite normal.

The post's function is to transfer the compression loads, which are straight down, to the hull to prevent the deck from caving in. The mast plate screws mainly keep the mast plate secure when raising or lowering the mast.

I have a 79 and found this to be true a few weeks ago when I tried to replace the aft starboard screw and found the hole to be enlarged, and nothing underneath to attach a longer screw to. I tapered the hole back with a carving tool, inserted a plug of beer can held in place by a piece of dental floss, filled with epoxy, re-bored, and reinserted screw. Seems to have worked.
