This is my first year owning a 1999 C250 WK and I find this to be quite a learning process. We stepped the Mast yesterday and had the backstay and forestay turnbuckles as loose as they would go. It took a large effort just to fasten the forestay. I should mention that there is a CDI Furler on the Forestay and I did raise the drum and loosen that as well. Is there something I am missing or is there a turnbuckle extension that would help? I also wonder if anyone has found a better replacement for these barrel turnbuckles that have a sliding sleeve over them. I don't like these at all. Thanks for any advice offered!

The turnbuckles used on the 250 are such a vast improvement over those many of us have experienced on previous boats that I know I'd be hard pressed to criticise them. There have been no reported failures from fracturing, the cotter pin locking is much more secure than jam nuts and they are self booting. I'm not suggesting that they couldn't be improved upon... but I've not seen any thing better for a 25 foot boat.

Regarding getting the forestay pinned. The process is a little more difficult with the upgraded trailer mast raising pole than it is using the jib halyard as with the jib halyard the mast truck gets pulled fully forward. I would suggest with your system that after the mast is pulled vertical, that the jib halyard is made to the bow pulpit and then hauled very tight to pull the mast truck forward.

A reminder that it is very important to cotter pin the forestay turnbuckle...failure to do so has led to several reported dismastings as the CDI furler is capable of spinning the turnbuckle open.
